Celebrate the New Baseball Season!

In honor of the many Major League Baseball teams who started their 2008 seasons today (and of the Yankees, who were rained out today and are making up their game tomorrow), I've compiled a list of five must-see baseball movies. So grab your peanuts and Crackerjacks and get ready to root, root, root for the home team!

The story of Yankee great Lou Gehrig, whose career was cut tragically short due to illness. Even though Gehrig's farewell speech was rewritten for the film, the film's version does include the most famous line: "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

The Natural (1984)
An unknown middle-aged baseball player comes out of nowhere and joins the New York Knights half way through one of the worst seasons in the team's history. The player inspires his teammates and helps the Knights find success.

Field of Dreams (1989)
"If you build it, he will come." An Iowa corn farmer hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field amidst his corn. He does build it and he does come, the second he being the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson, along with the ghosts of the seven other members of the Chicago White Sox who were banned from baseball for throwing the 1919 World Series.

Major League (1989)
The new owner of the Cleveland Indians wants to move the team, but the only way the contract will let her do that is if the team attracts poor attendance. She comes up with a plan, therefore, to put together the worst team she could find so that they will lose, attract small crowds, and she'll be able to move the team. When the team catches on to her plan, however, they have all the motivation they need to start winning.

A League of Their Own (1992)
I'll be honest: I've seen this movie hundreds of times and it's one of my favorites ever. It tells the story of the real -life professional women's baseball league, which started during World War II while the men were away fighting for their country, and of two competitive sisters who both join the league.

Did I leave any out? What are some of your favorite baseball movies? Here are two more lists of favorites that I found: ESPN.com and Baseball Almanac.

Go Yankees!
